Nelson Garrido

(Caracas Venezuela.1952) He studied primary and secondary studies in Italy, France and Chile and photography studios in the artist's workshop Carlos Cruz Diez, in Paris, in the years 1966-67. The NGO (Nelson Garrido Organization) Spaces for creation, collects the experiences and methodology of it as a photo teacher. The NGO, School of Photography, Alternative Cultural Center, has become an obligatory reference point in current Venezuelan artistic practice, expanding more and more towards all of Latin America. Garrido has created in the artistic work of him an iconographic language mix of religion, sex, humor and popular imagery. Violent and irreverent, the work of it is based on a constant experimentation of expressive means and a deep questioning of the system of socially accepted standards and beliefs. The photographic staging is the starting point of it; The aesthetics of the ugly, the checked eroticism in terms of religious sacrifice and violence as a detonating reactions, are some constant in the work of it. He is the first Venezuelan photographer distinguished with the National Plastic Arts Award (1991). He has participated in innumerable individual and collective exhibitions around the world, being the most recent open maps and the Venice architecture biennial.
