In its exploration of photography in connection to truth and memory values, Joan Fontcuberta has been developing the trauma project in recent years, a poetic and conceptual trip diving in photographic historical archives. In them Fontcuberta is interested in those images in traumatic state, ill images due to deterioration caused by moisture, mold or microorganisms. Images that are in the last sigh of representation, reduced to fantasy fingerprints in which memory fails: broken its bond with reality, visual information is lost and its document status vanishes.

In 2019 FontCuberta went to a selection of Mexican files and made more than a thousand tomas from negative glass rickeings. In this Mexican suite, Bella, tragic and somber, there are still fulgurses in the history of the country: the revolution, dramatic milestones, public personalities, social and family life ... The set of those graphic records covers from portraits of Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata and executions up to weddings and baptisms and identity photos, from folklore and traditions to the landscape and monumental heritage.
