In 2007, Ricardo Cases set out on a journey through Mali accompanied by a white man. Along the way, he photographs everything that catches his attention and takes portraits of his companion, a gentleman from Seville who basically thinks and looks. Upon his return, Cases reviews the material and begins to play with the images, starting from the idea of relating the two groups of photographs, those of his traveling companion and those of the territory he is visiting. However, he realizes that they do not have enough autonomy to count their purposes and after several attempts he decides to keep the material in a drawer. Years later, in 2015, he goes back to these images and begins to connect with them. Some suggest ideas: the lack of legitimacy that he felt as a photographer to talk about a place he knew briefly, the innocence of the gaze of the tourist who lets himself go, stimulated by the chance of the itinerary and by the exoticism of a culture and a reality. different; how opportune it can be to stay on the surface, in the imaginary, in the result of an experience so punctual that it almost seems like a dream. Then, decide to order the work with these new premises and edit this book with the collaboration of Iván del Rey de la Torre, with the intention that the text dance with the photographs starting from this melody. The relationship that is established reveals how the importance of images, in general, is not found in their materiality but in the tracing that we always carry with us in the brain and that, when we manufacture new images, they are nothing more than projections of these rubbings. This is how El Blanco arises, a story that, starting from a reflection on the tradition of the representation of peripheral territories by the West, reaches a questioning of the representation itself..
