"At a time when the world is facing the largest refugee and migration crisis since World War II, Incoming by Richard Mosse Irish artist winner of the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize is about the dire humanitarian and political situation of our time, the displacement of millions of people due to war, persecution and climate change. Along with enlightening texts by Mosse himself and the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, this 576-page volume combines stills from the artist's latest audiovisual creations in collaboration with the electronic music composer Ben Frost and cameraman Trevor Tweeten, an evocative and scathing multi-channel audiovisual installation, accompanied by a visceral soundtrack. The work captures the movements of refugees and migrants through the Middle East, North Africa and Europe with new technology Surveillance weaponry that detects a human body 30.3 km away to. Unable to differentiate skin color, this capture technology records only the contours of a relative difference in heat in a given scene, highlighting in the foreground the struggle of the fragile human body to survive in harsh environments.s.

As Mosse describes in his essay: The camera implies a certain aesthetic violence, which dehumanizes the subject, portrays people in a monstrous way as zombies, stripping the individuality of the body and portraying the human being as a mere biological trace. Through a direct and metaphorical allusion to hypothermia, mortality, epidemics, global warming, the pursuit of strategic objectives, border policing, xenophobia and the deprived lives of stateless people, the use by Mosse of a military camera represents an attempt to reveal its internal logic: an attempt to see what missiles see. Following the narrative sequence of the audiovisual, the book presents stills from the recording of a battle in Syria in which an American plane bombs Islamic State positions on the ground, scenes that show refugees accessing rescue boats off the coast of Libya or gathered along the Turkish shores under cover of darkness, making the dangerous journey through the Sahara desert, as well as the burning jungle refugee camp. As in the audiovisual, Mosse's book offers testimony to recent events mediated by visual weapons technology while shedding light on the ethical, technological, logistical and aesthetic issues that have led to the creation of this new work.
