Pierre David created this compendium of colors while he was in the Museum of Modern Art in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. The skin pigmentation on the backs of forty MAM employees was photographed and numbered to result in a grading of flesh tones. In an artist's book that refers to a color chart, the colors appear in a gradation, either in succession or in the simultaneity of the range of spread. The other side of the book reveals the portraits of these men distributed according to the same chromatic progress as the details of the skin, from the lightest to the darkest. The colors are coded and industrially produced by the Dutch paint manufacturer Sikkens / Akzo Nobel.
