Sleeping by the Mississippi | Alec Soth
Evolving from a series of road trips along the Mississippi River, Sleeping by the Mississippi captures the iconic yet often neglected third shoreline. Soth's richly descriptive large-format color photographs present an eclectic mix of individuals, landscapes and interiors. Sensual in the details and raw on the subject, Sleeping by the Mississippi provokes a constant atmosphere of loneliness, longing and dreaming. In the 46 mercilessly edited photos of the book, writes Anne Wilkes Tucker in the original essay published in the book, Soth alludes to disease, procreation, race, crime, learning, art, music, death, religion, redemption, politics and cheap sex.rato.
Like Robert Frank's classic The Americans, Sleeping by the Mississippi fuses a documentary style with poetic sensibilities. The Mississippi is less the subject of the book than its organizational structure. Without being bound by a rigid concept or ideology, the series is created out of a quintessential American spirit of wanderlust. Thirteen years since the book was first published, the artist's lyrical vision has undoubtedly taken on a nuanced meaning, one in which hope, fear, desire, and regret come together in the evocative journey throughout this mythical river.
