THE PHOTOBOOK | PRACTICAL WORKSHOP ON DESIGN, CONCEPT, MATERIALS AND BINDING

 LIVE WORKSHOP AT HYDRA
From 19 to 23 January 2022
COMPLETE WORKSHOP

In recent years, the photo book has not only developed as an important form of presentation for photographers, but has become an art form in its own right. Exhibitions, book fairs and university courses are dedicated to this medium, which can take a multitude of forms.

In this workshop, Lukas Birk, who has been producing photo books for two decades, will show practical examples of how to make a photo book mock-up, as well as simple binding possibilities that can be used for small productions and artists' books.

Conceptual issues related to their projects, as well as those of the participants, will also be discussed. At the end of the workshop, each participant will take home a finished dummy of their work.

LUKAS BIRK | AUSTRIA

He is a photographer. A storyteller. A curator. An editor. His multi-disciplinary projects have been turned into films, chronicles, virtual platforms and books. A large part of his work deals with photographic archives that he collects and contextualises in countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar.

"Every story has another way of being told". He has made films, books, online platforms and exhibitions in Europe, the United States and in faraway places in South and West Asia. An important aspect of each form of storytelling is both to establish an alternative form of narrative about historical events, as well as to find a local as well as a global audience that will benefit from the work in the long run.

Lukas researches his imagery through investigations and explorations very often in areas that have been affected by conflict and have not yet had the chance to present existing material in an artistic form. His narratives address official history by creating alternative plots and fictional elements alongside the commonly accepted facts.
Lukas initiated artist residencies in China and Indonesia (AustroSinoArtsProgram and Sewon Ar Space) and founded the research projects Afghan Box Camera Project and Myanmar Photo Archive.

His research focuses on the post-colonial era and portrays the background of his interpretation of these historical materials. Through long-term projects such as the Afghan Box Camera Project Lukas Birk has not only initiated a reconstruction of Afghanistan's local photographic history, but has also managed to keep alive a worldwide community working with the pinhole camera. Birk shows his research and narratives in a multimedia form.

Birk shows his research and narratives in a multimedia form. His publishing imprint, Fraglich Publishing, focuses primarily on photographic history in conflict zones. A large part of his work deals with photographic archives that he collects and contextualises in countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar.
