PROGRAM

TUTORS

JOSÉ LUIS LUGO

DESIGN IN THE PHOTOBOOK

Elements of the conception, development and production of photobooks. Review of the projects from the point of view of design, development and production with the aim of providing authors with a framework of the possibilities that this medium offers and the necessary practical tools to enable them to start working on the projects.

To get to know the book as a medium: publishing typology and physical description of the book, techniques and materials. Introduction to the work and consultancies that will be carried out throughout program.

ANA CASAS BRODA

THE PHOTOBOOK AS A WORK OF AUTHORSHIP

Ana Casas' tutoring will be focused on supporting each participant in the development of their own creative process, reflecting on individual and group needs, so that the work on the projects is coherent for each author.

Through accompaniment throughout the entire program, the mentoring seeks to support each participant in the development of the narrative of the book, which is constructed through an individual and singular process in which experimentation with images, materials, texts and other elements unveil the book that each author seeks to create. This process allows each author to immerse themselves in their work through experimentation in order to discover the enormous possibilities that the book offers them, and through this work, to construct their own book.

The mentoring will seek to create a common thread between the different workshops, supporting the participants in processing the various forms of work, comments, proposals and points of view of the guest lecturers, so that they do not lose the perspective of their own story and can take advantage of the various phases as vital parts of the book-making process itself.

PROGRAM

MODULES

FIRST MODULE

PHOTOBOOK PANORAMA
FRAMEWORK AND REVIEW OF PROJECTS
The photobook scene today. History, background and diversity in the proposals for author's books in the contemporary world. Authors, publishers and proposals. Review of the projects from the point of view of publishing and the construction of a discourse in the form of a photobook, with the aim of providing authors with a framework of the possibilities that this medium offers in order to encourage the start of work on the projects.

In this module the emphasis will be on different ways of constructing a narrative and reflecting on the content of the participants' projects, in order to create a solid working basis for the rest of the program.

LUKAS BIRK

THE PHOTOBOOK AS NARRATIVE

The workshop explores what a photobook can, should be or could become. The meetings will start with an initial presentation of Lukas' work and his book projects, how he researches and generates the narratives and makes decisions about the type of form in relation to the specific needs of each project - whether it is a commercially published book, a fanzine, a virtual platform or an exhibition. Each participant will present their project and the ideas behind it.

Emphasis will be placed on how visual, cultural and historical research can be combined to enhance different projects. The photobook as a form is not a workshop exclusively about photography, but about how to investigate narratives that allow the audience a deeper understanding of the projects.

CALIN KRUSE

EDITING, SEQUENCING AND DESIGN OF A PHOTOBOOK

This workshop focuses on the editing and sequencing of authors' work to create a photobook, from the aspects of design, typography, materials, layout and rhythm. Different materials will be shown - such as papers, cover samples, as well as photobooks with great design or authorial elements, and ideas. It will also review books where the meeting of elements has not been well developed, such as cases with excellent images and poor design or editing ideas.

Calin Kruse will show his editorial projects and comment on the process. Students will work under the close guidance of the teacher on their own projects individually and in groups with the intention of bringing in different points of view.

SECOND MODULE

DEEPENING THE PHOTOBOOK NARRATIVE
The development of independent publishers, their way of working and proposals. Why the photobook currently represents an important outlet for the work of authors. Conceptualisation. The development of a book in which form and content construct the work. This module will reflect on how the different formal decisions support the construction of the work and the transmission to the reader of what the author seeks to express.

It will analyse how each type of book and decisions such as form, print run, type of publication, among other factors, correspond to the specific needs of each work.

JUAN VALBUENA

A course on self-publishing, page layout, production and marketing of photography books designed for all those who want to explore the possibilities of the book as an optimal support for the dissemination of their photographic project. The aim of the course is to help to achieve the best book project for each of the participants, optimising each project according to the moment in which each proposal finds itself.

To this end, during the workshop, the natural process of creating a photobook will be developed and key decisions will be taken, from the selection and editing of the images to the possible publication, distribution and sale of the product, paying special attention to the intermediate phase of seeking coherence between the project and the object.
MORITZ PNEUMÜLLER
This workshop will work on the content of the participants' projects in order to promote their realisation in the photobook format by reviewing the different ways of constructing an author's discourse.the way in which we access images nowadays is very diverse, as there are different supports and different media for both professionals and the authors themselves. This workshop helps to understand and master all these possibilities for the creation and dissemination of the image, adapted to the requirements of the contemporary market.

The book; independent media such as fanzines or the author's book; audiovisual formats such as video, docuweb or apps, open up multiple possibilities for formalising our own independent discourse. Editing our material, transcending and relating our images to achieve a greater depth and understanding of the work, and subsequent communication to achieve an impact on the viewer. Authors, editors and image creators in general can use this workshop to gain access to professionals who have managed to develop their own projects successfully and who have set a new trend in image production, independently, optimising their resources and getting the most out of the projects they work with.

THIRD MODULE

PROJECT CONCEPTUALISATION
How to visually enhance and develop the discourse in book format. Visual articulation: Conceptualisation. Understanding the nature of the work and the needs it poses. Elements: Image production. Construction of the discourse, narrative structure, editing and design elements. Distribution: Circuits and the contemporary photobook market This module will explore the possibilities of constructing the work in relation to the design elements and the different decisions that will give formal and conceptual coherence to the development of the book.
RAMON PEZ
We believe that sharing and collaborating with different people, in different roles, only enriches projects, taking them to the next level. During this two-day workshop Ramon Pez will delve in detail into different projects she has developed over the last few years. Analysing the organic working method she developed with Laia Abril,

will show how their teamwork system works. Participants will be able to understand and have access to the behind-the-scenes process of making a book, so that, after the intense day of the workshop, they will be able to apply it to their own project: from self-publishing to the largest publishing project; from 2 people to the largest team: concept, design, editing, production, dissemination and distribution.

MARKUS SCHADEN

The PHOTOBOOK

Once a photobook has been printed, its edition cannot be changed. An exhibition, on the other hand, can be changed as often as you like: after the opening, for example, or when it is shown at other venues. Curators value this flexibility. Artists often do not. For them, the photobook is a guarantee that their artistic statement will remain unchanged, wherever and whenever their book is looked at. Moreover, it is much simpler and less expensive for a photobook to travel than to move an exhibition.

Seen in this way, the photobook is itself a travelling exhibition. The photobook as a whole is a work in itself. But the photobook only unfolds when someone takes it in their hands and allows it to have different readings.

FOURTH MODULE

MODEL PRODUCTION AND PRODUCTION PROCESSES
Materials and printing: the possibilities that material and technique offer to the conceptualisation and practical construction of photographic discourse in books. Binding. Costs. Forms of printing. Different forms of presentation. Revision of the books, final adjustments, production of mock-ups, critique of the results from different perspectives, etc. In this module, the aim will be to specify the coherence of the structure of the narrative and all the elements that construct the photobook conceptually and formally as a work of art.
YUMI GOTO

THE PHOTOBOOK AS AN OBJECT
In the process of making history visible in a photobook, it is necessary to find a technique to investigate and gain deeper knowledge. When concentrating on the work, the author has the opportunity to experience the surprising and unique discoveries that only emerge during the working process itself. By letting oneself be attracted by stereotypical ideas, one can discover a new method that is really more suitable for the project, which goes far beyond orthodox ways of editing, such as selecting and composing with the photos.

Editing photobook mock-ups is now possible using digital tools, but we seek to produce the mock-ups in a way that unfolds the physical relationship with the object and its textures.

FIFTH MODULE

MODEL PRODUCTION AND PRODUCTION PROCESSES
Final paper. On each book throughout the period between the fourth and fifth module. Review of the books, final adjustments, production of mock-ups, critique of the results from different perspectives.
INCUBATOR PHOTOBOOK PRODUCTION LABORATORY 2016 AND 2017
Based on the experience of the 2016 and 2017 editions of this program, we decided to create a special module for the production of special editions of the photobooks of all participants.
