PHOTOGRAPHY AS METAPHOR. AN APPROACH TO THE NEW LANGUAGES

NELSON GARRIDO

From 15 to 17 June 2016
This workshop will explore photography constructed from a critical perspective, both from artistic, political and social work, which in Nelson Garrido's images meet with a sense of humour, which has created one of the most controversial and suggestive works of recent years.

Nelson Garrido, one of Venezuela's most renowned photographers, has created in his artistic work an iconographic language that blends religion, sex, humour and popular imagery. Violent and irreverent, his work is based on a constant experimentation of expressive means and a profound questioning of the socially accepted system of norms and beliefs. The photographic mise-en-scène is his starting point; the aesthetics of the ugly, eroticism revisited in terms of religious sacrifice and violence as a trigger for reactions are some of the constants in his work.

NELSON GARRIDO
VENEZUELA

He studied in Italy, France and Chile. From an early age he met and lived with the artist Carlos Cruz Diez in Paris. The Nelson Garrido NGO brings together his experiences and particular methodology as a photography teacher.
From 1969 to 1971 he lives in Chile. He began to work as a set designer and to take his first photographs, especially portraits, where his works of Nicanor Parra stand out, which were published in the poet's book entitled Obra gruesa (1969) by Editorial Universitaria. For almost a decade (1971-1980), he carried out various community and cultural activities in the Carapita sector of Caracas. During those years he taught at the Neumann Institute of Design under the tutelage of John Lange and Christian Belpaire.

From 1978 he worked as a photographer for the magazine M of the Neumann Foundation and in 1979 for the Bigott Foundation. In 1981 he travelled to Europe to perfect his techniques. From 1982 onwards he carried out a double work: on the one hand, an anthropological documentary that developed in conjunction with his work at the Bigott Foundation; on the other hand, the development of a plastic language that began to stand out in some exhibitions and has continued to the present day.
