ENGAGING WITH COLLECTIONS

Deborah Klochko

From 14 to 16 June 2018
Photographic collections not only bring together objects, but each of their elements condense different layers of meanings and readings. Each work offers the possibility of being analysed from its historical value, its connection with contemporary culture, detonating specific narratives that provide complex levels of information about the work itself, about the collection as a curatorship, and even a window into the universe of the author, which make sense through the activation of the viewer's baggage.

This workshop offers the opportunity to have a dialogue with the director of the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, California, one of the most important museums of contemporary photography in the United States, which is characterised by a varied and interesting program of photography exhibitions, with special emphasis on generating a dialogue with the public through multiple educational activities.MOPA has one of the most extensive collections of both historical and contemporary photography, and carries out a program of activities for different audiences that seek to generate a living relationship with the collection as a cultural and historical repository.
Deborah Klochko will present on this vision of collections and her work at this important museum. Her presentation will examine multiple collection-based projects, from publications to crowdsourced interactive exhibitions to education-focused learning opportunities, and beyond the care and maintenance of a museum collection to the broader discussion of access and opportunity to collections for researchers, audiences, students, and artists. In addition, the presentation will explore how exhibitions and programming can influence acquisitions in private and public collections.

In addition, Deborah Klochko will review the participants' portfolios individually, within a group dynamic, in which special importance will be given to how the participants present their work, how to have a dialogue with the reviewer and receive useful feedback for the further development of their work. Special emphasis will be given to the fact that the reviews will help the participants to learn the best ways to present their work to curators, museums, and therefore the presence of the group in the reviews of each participant will be a fundamental part of the dynamic.

NEW BINATIONAL CURATORIAL PROCESS BRINGS CONTEMPORARY MEXICAN PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION TO SAN DIEGO.

As part of the Getty-led initiative Pacific Standard Time: LA / LA, the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA), presented Punto/Contrapunto from 4/11/2017 to 11)02/2018 an exhibition of works by nineteen contemporary Mexican photographers whose images explore the political, economic and social issues of a country that is tied to the past, but seeks a new future.

At a time when there is considerable interest in the issues surrounding the political, economic and social boundaries between Mexico and the United States, Punto/Contrapunto presents nineteen photographers whose work reflects the cultural transformations currently unfolding in the country. These artists explore the intersection between the perceived "traditional" Mexican culture and the contemporary present in Mexico. The artists expand upon the history of photography in Mexico using a variety of innovative techniques including installation, video appropriation and working on the surface of the photographic print.

The works presented here challenge our understanding of Mexican photography by exploring themes such as abstraction, landscape, religion, gender, pain or fractures in society. In a global environment, it is imperative that we communicate and understand each other across borders - physical, cultural, artistic or linguistic - and these works provide an opportunity for that conversation.
