VENGAN A COMERMI CUERPO
COME TO EAT MY BODY
Raúl Jiménez Jiménez
Come to Eat My Body, by Raúl Jiménez Jiménez, is a photobook in which three inseparable realities confront each other: flesh as an intrinsic dimension of living matter; the consciousness that inhabits it and whose existence depends upon it; and the ineluctable certainty that this flesh is condemned to decay and perish.
Its ruin then entails not only the end of matter, but also the extinction of the consciousness that once knew it as its own body. The biological condition, however, is not defined by its foreseeable end; it is by its brutal pulse that compels it to grow, mutate, transform and, even so, persist, often independently of the will of the consciousness housed within it, which can do nothing but witness the process with a look of horror.
Is in the middle of this violence that the author creates his work. As a patient living with an incurable, progressive and disfiguring disease, his photographic practice offers a singular perspective: casting aside the modesty of self-censorship and dispensing any euphemistic or attenuating metaphors, he seeks to expose, with utter directness, the starkest reality of life surviving by growing against itself.
“This work is born of an unceasing exploration of the wounded body: my own, the proximate, the familial and of the other; the fleshly body, the vegetal and even the mineral; the one that dwells and that allows another to nest within it. Bodies that pump blood, sap or oil; all wounded by disease, gnawed away by the predations of time, besieged by their spirit’s entreaties and marked by the foreboding of death and inexhaustibility of torment.”
And yet, something else breathes within these photographs: a force that refuses to be extinguished. It is an irreducible will, the fierce determination to persist even beyond mutation, mutilation, blinding suffering or maddening rage. The life drive as a frenzied and incomprehensible compulsion rising before a bewildered cosmos whose law is entropy. Pure, pure, pure life.
As a book, the chosen materials also possess a discursive value as their own: their arrangement speaks of the unpredictability that awaits with every turn of the page (or in life); of an appropriation of the sacred, by printing a sacred text of its own on the same material upon which the classics have been printed; and of the degradation the object will eventually undergo, made singular by the hands of whoever chooses to read it.
Vengan a comer mi cuerpo.”
“I make these photographs because they are me. Each sheet, each diptych: a self-portrait in which the camera simply pointed to a different direction. In them, I delve into the vicissitudes of organic existence: living in constant pain and in distrust of my own body; struggling to remain human in the face of the loss of health and identity; belonging to a society that condemns those living under similar conditions to invisibility. I invite you: come to accept the disobedience of the flesh and the unavoidable emptying of what we once were. Come to the damage, to the forfeiture, to the drowning. Come to eat my body.”
