ABOUT THIS BOOK
EXOTICA is a work that reinterprets and follows in the imaginary footsteps of adventurers and explorers who dared to undertake complex and dangerous expeditions into the "wild territories" of Mexico throughout the 9th - 20th centuries. These dangerous expeditions led mainly to great scientific discoveries documented in valuable chronicles and logs and shared around the world. Being born and raised in Mexico as a first generation European migrant, there is a direct link between these famous explorers and my family roots. These expeditions are also somehow related to the eternal human need to find one's own paradise, which has a wide range of interpretations. The Bible presents Paradise as a garden in which the first couple of human beings live free of any sickness and death. But when they disobey God, they remain expelled and cast out of these perfect living conditions forever. In cosmological contexts it describes the world before it was contaminated by evil, and is often described as a "higher place" in contrast to this world or to underworlds such as Hell. In the tourism industry it is used as a tool to escape from the daily grind, and a temptation to sell prohibition and exclusivity accessible to a minority of people. Finally, in the history of art it has been revealed over many periods of time in a variety of forms, mainly as the opposite place to hell.
