ABOUT THIS BOOK

Through photographs and texts in this book, the author's proposal for reflection on contemporary art and its practice is constructed. The minimalism and sometimes surrealism of the images is interwoven with the text that questions art from different perspectives, from theory to poetic writing. For me photography is not a discipline but a way of life. I'm interested in the fact that in my daily life my work provides a space for freedom and play. 

Exploring everyday objects as well as some fragments of pre-Hispanic artefacts allows me to explore more about who I am and where I come from. 

 All this search starts from intuition and leads me to think of my artistic practice as a ball of plasticine that I hold in my hands, which I knead and transform continuously; or like a chewing gum being chewed". 
Through images and texts Diego Moreno narrates the complexity of his family history, one that is marked by disturbing cycles of domestic violence, machismo and attachment to the Catholic religion. This photobook, in the form of a family album, allows the author to construct a present to find his place in the world and to reflect more deeply on the fragility and complexity of the human condition, and the hostile time we inhabit. 

Huésped has been developed over six years, during which Diego has explored his own identity through an intense process of immersion in photography as a means of connecting with his family universe, creating and recreating scenes that allow us to enter into this complex web of relationships, at the same time as they are transformed in the photographic act itself. From the time of the Spanish Conquest, 

Chiapas has been a state in Mexico where diverse cultures coexist, where cultural and social contrasts remain in constant tension. Mexico's border with Latin America, a crossing point for undocumented migrants, the scene of the Zapatista struggle, a place inhabited by indigenous peoples who keep alive pre-Hispanic customs, the so-called "coletos", descendants of Spaniards, mestizos and foreigners, make up an extremely complex social mosaic.

Mexico City, Mexico, 199. Jael Orea explores photography from various perspectives that gradually build a complex and subtle discourse. In his wanderings around the outskirts of Mexico City, he encounters situations and engages strangers in conversation, building the results into visual and literary narratives. Orea approaches photography as a way of confronting one's own experience of the world, focusing on the notion of the extraordinary and breaking it down into certain concepts that shape his work. By deconstructing experience into its elements, he reflects on the self as a unit and art as a tool for sharing an action generated from time spent with the strangers he encounters, from which he constructs stories in images and words. Orea assembles the elements into small artist's books, unique pieces that he offers to interested buyers online, with the aim of carrying out an action that can once again be a way of generating trust between people who do not know each other personally, thus closing the cycle of the work both conceptually and poetically.
